Stainless steel is an inherently corrosion resistant material ideal for use in some of the more demanding applications. Extensively used within the pharmaceutical, chemical, food & beverage and oil & gas industries, farming communities, and for the gaseous zones of some mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digester tanks.

Stainless Steel Tanks

Permastore stainless tanks are developed using the latest computer aided design principles. This takes into account the most efficient use of different grades of material, and the application they are to be used within.

All materials are supplied in either a 2B cold rolled mill finish, or a 1D hot rolled finish based on the thickness of the material supplied. This provides a good balance between it's properties and its aesthetic finish. Permastore always source directly from a mill, or primary stockholders, and not from brokers.

All components are manufactured to Permastore’s independently tested and verified Welding Procedure Qualification Records (WPQR) to BS EN ISO 15614-1; and Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) by fully certified coded welders to BS EN ISO 9606-1.

The tank components are post weld cleaned and finished ensuring the best possible overall appearance and presentation of the finished product. When in sheet form the stainless steel is poly-coated on the external surface to protect the finish during both manufacture and installation.

PERMASTORE® tanks are constructed from a number of different components including the tank shell, access ladders, walkways, pipework connections and the roof.  One of the most significant risks to the long-term performance is the risk of bimetallic corrosion. this happens when dissimilar metals such as stainless steel and mild steel effectively come into “electrical contact” via an electrolyte. This could be from the contents held within a tank, or from rainwater or a humid external environment. Bimetallic corrosion can be prevented by insulating dissimilar metals, or by preventing contact with an electrolyte using a suitable gasket, sealant, or a paint coating system. Permastore ensure that where different metals are used in its structures, the products are designed with full consideration given to protect them.

Performance of Stainless Steel Tanks

Stainless steel storage tanks are generally very corrosion resistant and will perform satisfactorily in most environments. They do not suffer from the general loss of section that is characteristic of rusting in irons and carbon steels.

However, this does not negate the requirement for the process designer to carefully consider the nature of the tank contents being stored. Storage temperature and chemical composition, upon the rate of corrosion which ultimately could have an impact upon the tank structure’s performance and design life.

Permastore stainless steel tanks are high quality and designed for a long maintenance free life. They are readily recyclable at the end of their economic life and are a valuable useable feedstock for producers, thus contributing to sustainable development.

Application: pH range: pH 3-11 Material Grades: stainless steel 316/1.4401 and 316L/1.4404 manufactured in accordance with EN 10088 or relevant international standards, including ASTM A240/ASME SA-240 as appropriate.

Chemical resistance and physical properties of stainless steel are published on the BSSA website at bssa.org.uk/technical-help/. Guidance should be considered to ensure that the grade(s) selected are appropriate for the chosen application.

Permastore manufacture a wide range of material grades and thicknesses, providing a combination of strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. However, when process designers specify a grade of steel to be used on a project, due consideration should be given to chemical concentration and temperature as significant factors in their design review.

The performance of a PERMASTORE® stainless steel tank is regularly inspected and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. It has the potential to achieve a service life up to 40 years.

Applications include:

  • Food and beverage industrial process.
  • Treatment and storage tanks.
  • Pharmaceutical and chemical process.
  • Dairy farming pasteurisation tanks.
  • Potable Water.
  • Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB).
  • Reactor tanks.
  • Mesophilic Digester Tanks (Gaseous Zone).
  • Thermophilic Digester Tanks (Gaseous Zone).

All applications are subject to chemical concentration and temperature considerations. All specifications relate to the contact surfaces only.
